Eörs Szathmáry (born in Hungary in 1959) completed his Ph.D. at Eötvös University in Budapest in 1984. He is a theoretical evolutionary biologist and since 2011 he is the director of the Parmenides Center for the Conceptual Foundations of Science at the Parmenides Foundation in Munich, Germany. He also served as Director General of the Centre for Ecological Research in Hungary. His research fields mainly include: the major evolutionary transitions, origins of life, emergence of the human language faculty, levels and mechanisms of biological cooperation, theoretical biology and astrobiology. He has published two important books together with John Maynard Smith, and these books are considered the standard references in the field. (The Major Transitions in Evolution, Freeman, 1995, and The Origins of Life, Oxford University Press, 1999).
